When to go
Summer goes hand in hand with hot weather and sunshine, and is the ideal time of year to visit either the hinterland or the coast and the islands of the Mediterranean, provided you don't object to squeezing your own beach towel into the tightly packed rows.
If that's not your thing, plump for the low seasons. The hot weather has often already started in spring. In autumn, the tendency towards an Indian summer atmosphere means it can still be pleasant to bathe in the sea until late October. Having said that, look out for storms, which can be memorable.
In winter time, which is often bright, you can take to the slopes in the resorts of Isola 2000 or Auron. The summits are covered with snow, while the mimosa is already flowering among the greenery. February is carnival month, bringing first and foremost the Carnaval de Nice, as well as the fruit and flower-decked floats of the Corsos Fleuris and Corso Fruités processions, in Menton for the Fête du Citron (Lemon Festival), but also Bormes-les-Mimosas and Mandelieu.
Finally, bear in mind that the mistral can quickly chill the atmosphere, whatever the season.
