Guillestre
The Essential
Interesting
The Guillestrois is a superb mountainous corrie bordering on Les Écrins, Queyras and Embrunais. Le Guillestre is lucky on two counts: its mountains protect it from rain (the precipitation rate there is one of the lowest in France). And on Mondays the town at the centre of this natural crossroads hosts Queyras' main market, which has seen trade between the neighbouring valleys since the Middle Ages. There are numerous walks starting in Guillestre that offer lovely views of the region, including from the Belvédère de l'Homme-de-Pierre, at 2 374m altitude.
