When to go
Let the area's programme of events and festivals dictate your plans! Traditions are celebrated in summer, when the weather in Drôme is hot and dry. Things get started with the Fête de la Transhumance in Die: three days of festivities in late June, when the flocks of sheep cross the town. In July, Nyons celebrates olives; in August, it's the turn of picodon (a small, round goats' cheese) to be fêted in Dieulefit.
There is no shortage of culture either, with music and literary festivals, such as Grignan's Festival de la Correspondance, coming thick and fast in July, while the heat makes a swim in one of the rivers all the more appealing.
Out of season, the pace of life in Drôme slows right down. But you will still find some activity on the rock faces of the Forêt de Saoû in spring or autumn. In the biting-cold winter, skiers can hit the snowy slopes of the Vercors.
