Rising above Grenoble like a fortress, the Vercors is protected by the largest Regional nature park in the northern Alps. It is reached by narrow gorges such as the Grands Goulets or La Bourne. The high, open plateaux are covered with forests to the north, whereas the arid, deserted southern highlands are more reminiscent of south of France. Countless sink-holes and caves, such as Coufin cave, are heaven for pot-holers. In winter, its stunning landscape is very popular with alpine and cross-country skiers.
