In the shadow of the crests of the Lente forest and the Vercors foothills, this village was an important site in the history of the French Resistance. Many of their fighters, such as Eugène Chavant, Jean Prévost, Marc Riboud, Marc Ferro and Abbé Pierre, passed through. The villagers along with some members of the Resistance were massacred here on 21 July 1944 by Germans who flew in on gliders. Vassieux will always be associated with resistance to barbarity. A number of memorial sites pay tribute to this heroic episode of the war.
