Useful information : When to go...
When to go
It all depends on you! To enjoy the snowy peaks of the Alps, it is of course in winter that you should come. Bearing in mind that certain highly prized resorts are packed and expensive between late December and early March, plump for late in the season or for one of the more family-oriented resorts to avoid the crowds. In summer, hikers and all manner of sports enthusiasts delight in the valleys and massifs.
However, head to Drôme, Ardèche and the area around Lyon in the low seasons, which offer the advantage of being mild and pleasant. It's prime time to go walking in the Forêt de Saoû or to schedule your visit to the Caverne du Pont-d'Arc. In summer, it can be very hot. It's preferable to avoid the large towns, which unfortunately become very stifling and polluted when the temperatures rise; instead, head down into the gorges of the Ardèche, where it is cool, even if lots of other visitors have had the same idea.
Lastly, if there is one flagship event not to be missed, it would have to be the Fête des Lumières in Lyon in December.
