At an altitude of 1,700m/5,577ft, this village stands on a plateau framed by the Vanoise range. A fire in 1944 destroyed much of Bessans' traditional 19C housing. Renowned both for its thriving farming traditions and generations of craftsmen, it produces threatening painted wooden devils. Don't miss the other handicrafts of Bessans' sculptors as you stroll through the village, including carved beams adorning the roof peaks of houses and Passion crosses.
