The city was built during the 17C at the crossroads of several major routes. It burnt down in 1945, but was later rebuilt on a grid plan around the huge rectangular Marktplatz with its arcaded houses. Also worth seeing is the church (17C) which has a curious layout: its two naves, set at a right-angle, form one of the corners of the Marktplatz. On the carved lectern you can see the Four Evangelists (12C). Also keep an eye open for the baptismal fonts made around 1100 adorned with masks and depictions of animals.
