Offenburg

Offenburg
The Essential
Offenburg is the administrative and industrial centre of the Ortenau region. Probably founded in 1148 by the Dukes of Zähringen, it was the site of a Roman settlement at the start of the Common Era. Later promoted to imperial city status by Emperor Frederick II in 1240, its development was brutally interrupted in 1689 when it was burnt to the ground by Louis XIV's troops during the Nine Years' War.
