The town nestles against the flank of a semicircular slope rising from the Rhine. Waldshut has managed to preserve its two fortified gateways. The heart of the historic old town is Kaiserstrasse - a street whose orderly line of houses is broken only by overhanging eaves. It comes to an end in the west with the Basle Gate and in the east with the Schaffhaus Gate. The town hall, with its magnificent doorway and turret with a sundial, was built in 1770. The «Alte Metzig» houses the local museum of arts and traditions.
