This small episcopal city lies in the heart of the of Altmühl Valley nature reserve. The town owes its Baroque character to the reconstruction following the burning of the town by the Swedes in 1634 after the bloody Thirty Years War, from which only the cathedral emerged unscathed. Eichstätt is also home to a number of impressive contemporary architectural works, such as the Pedagogic University and the Summer Residence of the Catholic University.
