Landsberg, on the ancient road from Salzburg to Memmingen, was a border town between Swabia and Bavaria. It became wealthy thanks to revenue from tolls and trade. The fortified towers, gates and perimeter walls give it an intriguing medieval atmosphere. From the shady promenade, on the west bank of the Lech, where it meets the Karolinen-brücke, there is a fine view of the city's tiered site.
