The Komische Oper has a striking appearance. Its external façade was rebuilt in the late 1960s in the stark style of the GDR. In contrast, its interior is adorned with an array of stucco, gold leaf, Baroque mirrors and thick velvet in a style more typical of the late 19C. Called the Metropol Theatre for a time, the opera took the name Comic Opera after the Second World War and is today one of the three most important opera houses in the capital.
