One of the gateways to the Spreewald, the small port of Lübbenau offers the chance to explore the maze of local canals by barge. The old town, which lived for many years from market gardening, flax growing and the sheet trade, is dominated by the Church of St Nicholas, built between 1738 and 1741. The Gate House contains the Spreewald Museum tracing the history and life of the Spree Forest.
