Naumburg, on the edge of the Thuringian Basin, has been the seat of a bishopric since 1028, developing as an independent town alongside the cathedral from the 12C. A major trading centre in the Late Middle Ages and the Renaissance, Naumburg and its trade fair seriously rivalled Leipzig. It came under Prussian control with the Congress of Vienna, and in 1991 was one of five towns and cities in the former GDR to be chosen as a model for the restoration of its historic centre.
