Founded in 780 by Charlemagne, this town was still part of the Hanseatic League in the 17C and traded with Bremen and Frisia. Its partly pedestrianised old town still has several Rococo façades and charming half-timbered houses. Take a look at the town hall, built in 1512 in the Late-Gothic style, and St Marien (St Mary's Church). Don't miss the stunning Felix Nussbaum Haus, a museum dedicated to the painter and designed by Daniel Libeskind.
