The Essential
Interesting
The town of Stade, over a thousand years old, is located on the banks of the Schwinge, a navigable river that flows into the Elbe to the north east. In the Middle Ages, the port of Stade rivalled that of Hamburg. The Swedish occupied Stade during the Thirty Years' War, making it the military and administrative centre of their northern German possessions for 70 years.
