Housed in a building designed by P. Busmann and G. Haberer, the jagged roof of the Ludwig museum provides a striking contrast with the city's Gothic cathedral and railway station. 20C art takes pride of place in this museum with work by leading artists from most of the major artistic movements (Expressionism, Die Brücke, Der Blaue Reiter, Constructivism, Bauhaus, New Objectivity etc) right up to Pop Art and contemporary art. The museum is also home to one of the largest collections of 19C and 20C photographs in Europe.
