The historic imperial city of Speyer, on the left bank of the Rhine, is distinguishable from afar by its bell towers. The old city boasts a prestigious past; it is home to a magnificent cathedral - the largest Romanesque edifice in Europe - in whose crypt several emperors are buried. After visiting the city's landmark monument, it is pleasant to stroll along Maximilianstraße, a street built for triumphalist parades that leads to the imposing Altpörtel, and the pedestrianised banks of the Rhine.
