Kiel canal, 100km/62mi long, links the North Sea to the Baltic, from Brunsbüttle to Kiel and was opened in 1895 by Wilhelm II. The Holtenau locks link it to the Baltic. Among the constructions spanning the canal worthy of mention are Rendsburg, Grünental and Hochdonn high bridges.
