Jena, to the northeast of the Thuringian Forest, began to develop after a university was founded here. Thereafter the city's reputation was enhanced by numerous scientists and thinkers such as Goethe, Schiller, philologist Wilhelm von Humboldt and his geographer brother Alexander. In the mid-19C, Carl Zeiss and Ernst Abbe developed the optical industry, starting with a state-of-the-art invention, the microscope. Today, Jena remains at the cutting-edge of technology.
