The Essential
There is the picture postcard Greece, with its antique ruins and paradisiac islands, and the other, more intimate country, characterised by a relaxed lifestyle and hospitable inhabitants. Both are inextricably entwined.
After an unavoidable visit to admire the Acropolis, linger a while in Athens and explore the Plaka district. Then head out to discover the Byzantine Mystra and the antique towns of Epidaurus and Mycenae in the Peloponnese. Then head north to Delphi, to the magical Meteora where the 14C and 15C monasteries stand proudly on imposing rocky outcrops, and on to the Macedonian site of Vergina.
Greece's star attractions are also its islands! Corfu, the jewel of the Ionian islands, Rhodes, the top destination of the Dodecanese, without forgetting Crete and a hike in the vertiginous Samaria gorges, a drink in the Venetian port of Hania or a dip in the lagoon of Balos!
You may want to finish with a spot of relaxation, so we have kept the best for the end: the Cyclades! Santorini and its volcanic caldera, the beaches and nightclubs of b>Mykonos, Folegandros and the restaurants of Hora to sample delicious grilled fish in olive oil to the haunting tunes of rebetiko. Welcome to paradise!

Crete : Elounda, luxury, calm and grilled fish

Once upon a time there was a land of rock and sun, forgotten by the gods, with a tormented history. At present, the same land is a gorgeous haven caressed by the turquoise sea. Welcome to Elounda, a small coastal town in the north of Crete.

Athens, much more than just an urban museum

Athens is much more than its Acropolis and traffic jams. The Greek capital is not a ‘museum city’ stuck in time; its soul is revealed in the mosaic of its quarters.
