From the great rock of the Acropolis, the city dubbed Tsimentoupoli ("Cement City") stretches as far as the eye can see and is home to more than a third of Greece's population and a whole host of ways of life. While the Parthenon continues to fascinate, the capital is much more than a sleepy relic of the past. It was rejuvenated in 2017 by a new cultural centre designed by Italian architect Renzo Piano. Despite the economic crisis, nothing seems to deter tourists from visiting this sublime, frenetic and endlessly appealing city.
