Erechtheion

Highly recommended
Jewel of the Acropolis and masterpiece of Ionic art (406 BC), the Erechtheion served various cults before becoming a church, a palace, a harem and then a military magazine. The famous Porch of the Kores is named the "Caryatids Balcony" because its architrave is supported by six statues (copies) of young women, noble of stance and clad in tunics with parallel folds. The eastern porch leads to the sanctuary that housed the oldest statue of Athena. The western façade was modified during the Roman era.

Our reports

Athens, much more than just an urban museum

Athens is much more than its Acropolis and traffic jams. The Greek capital is not a ‘museum city’ stuck in time; its soul is revealed in the mosaic of its quarters.
