When to go
Avoid Athens in the summer months! The heat is overpowering, the Acropolis and the Parthenon are overrun with tourists and prices are at their highest… One redeeming event is the open-air film festival in the evening.
If at all possible, try and go during the shoulder seasons. Spring is mild and very pleasant: there are fewer crowds in the lanes of Plaka or around the Parthenon and you can already take a seat on a terrace and admire the bougainvillea in flower while sipping a cool drink. Autumn days and evenings are also very pleasant and you can spend just as much time outdoors, although the storms can result in heavy rainfall. Even though there are fewer tourists, the city remains very lively, as its museums and cultural events bear witness.
Winter in Athens is also a serious option because the city remains busy and the warm temperatures and clear skies make sight-seeing most enjoyable.
Hotels in Athens tend to be 30 or 40% more expensive than elsewhere in Greece, for equivalent facilities. A decent room will cost from £70/100 (€80/120).
