Monastiraki

The former Turkish quarter is now a working-class shopping district, home to Athens's flea market. Particularly lively in the mornings, Monastiraki Square is at the heart of the action. You will notice the bell tower of the Byzantine church, Panagia Pandanassa. Nicknamed monastiraki ("little monastery"), it is the namesake of the local bazaar, which in Ottoman times stretched as far as the Roman Agora. Not far away is Tzistarakis Mosque (1759), which houses the ceramics collection of the Museum of Greek Folk Art.

Our reports

Athens, much more than just an urban museum

Athens is much more than its Acropolis and traffic jams. The Greek capital is not a ‘museum city’ stuck in time; its soul is revealed in the mosaic of its quarters.
