With its historic old town (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) and Venetian port bearing signs of former Turkish rule, the first capital of independent Crete is the jewel in the island's crown. A seaside town and commercial centre, Chania also has narrow streets reminiscent of North African souks, sumptuous façades, Venetian houses with ornate balconies giving onto the sea, a quayside covered with café terraces, and traditional kafenia. It's a modern town dotted with bustling squares planted with trees.
