To the west of Chania, on a prosperous agricultural plain, Kissamos runs on Crete time, well off the main tourist track. The city is sometimes called Kastelli, or Kissamos, a name it gets from its Venetian fortress (castello in Italian), a few wall sections of which remain near the square, Plateia Tzanakaki, the centre of the town. There, visit the Archaeological Museum, admire the white façade of the church, Agios Spiridona, which overlooks the bay, and head to the beach below.
