The principal gateway to Crete, Heraklion is a young and dynamic city. Virtually destroyed during the Second World War, it has retained few traces of its past. But its mighty ramparts, Venetian fort, former arsenals and some elegant monuments are still standing. Heraklion also boasts one of Greece's best archaeological museums. At night, the party gets into full swing thanks to the cafés and bars, each more original in decor and ambience than the next.
