Iraklion
The Essential
Interesting
Iráklio is the gateway to Crete, an obligatory stopover before dispersing to the various resorts on the coast. Destroyed during the Second World War, the town was revived with a huge amount of concrete. The only historical features are the massive ramparts, the Venetian fort and arsenals and some elegant Venetian buildings. However, there are places to enjoy in this bustling, modern town if you take the time to explore its streets and discover its peaceful little squares. Herein lies its special charm.
