Matala, a former fishing village, has become very popular with tourists and its streets are teeming with people from the early morning. The charm of the site is due to its beach and the little villages lying around it, which have kept intact a certain character and can serve as a base for exploring the Messara Plain. The cliff, perforated by grottoes that are thought to have served as burial places in Antiquity and hosted the hippies who came in the 1960s and 1970s, offers a good vantage point.
