Although the port of Adamas is where most of the island's shops and essential services are concentrated, the true heart of Milos is Plaka. Nestled up high among the whitewashed houses is an archaeological museum that houses a copy of the famous Venus (the original is in Paris), as well as the Lady of Filakopi, a clay figurine representing a female divinity, scarcely 20cm high. High up in the village are the ruins of a (citadel) which served as a refuge from pirates in the Middle Ages. There is a good panoramic view from here.
