The village of Skiathos, the main town of the island of the same name and a bustling resort in summer, is built on two hillsides overlooking a huge, sheltered harbour; the fishing port and marina are protected by an islet (Bourtzi), which was fortified in the Middle Ages. The shady waterfront is crowded by café terraces and tavernas serving fish. In town, you can visit the house of the novelist Alexandros Papadiamantis (1851-1911), who often wrote about Skiathos in his books.
