The Essential
Set in the Pagasetic Gulf, Volos occupies the site of ancient Iolkos. Often hit by earthquakes, it was rebuilt on each occasion and today looks much like any other modern town. In short, Volos has few attractions for the traveller, apart from its astonishing Archaeological Museum, which houses a magnificent collection of gold jewellery and Mycenaean vases. The Pelion massif, an area of untamed forests and mountains bordered by the Aegean Sea, is a stone's throw away.
