When to go
Spring and autumn are the most pleasant seasons to visit Budapest. The weather is mild, the tourist sites yet to be invaded by throngs of tourists and the flower-decked parks are at their most beautiful. In late March, the country celebrates the advent of spring with the most important cultural event of the year: the Budapest Spring Festival. Concerts, ballets, dance, theatre, operas and operettas resonate throughout the capital for over a fortnight.
The hot, humid summers are the scene of a host of festive events that are greatly appreciated by the many tourists. On Saturday evenings, wild sparties (contraction of spa and party) are thrown in the capital’s thermal baths. Beware, many of the hotels are often fully booked during the capital’s major events, such as the Formula One Grand Prix in late July.
The winters are very cold and the days are short. All the more reason to treat yourself to a bath in the hot springs or a break in one of the magnificent turn-of-the-20C cafés.
