When to go
The summers are long and hot in Hungary, even stifling in the plains. Most of the holidaymakers will be found in the seaside resorts of Lake Balaton at this time, when the temperature of the water is ideal for swimming. Among the country’s numerous summer festivals, that of Nagykállo, in August, is undoubtedly one of the leading events of Hungary.
However, if you are in search of tranquillity, we recommend September. The heat is more bearable and there are far fewer tourists. You will also be able to enjoy some good jazz during the Debrecen festival.
Spring and autumn are both a riot of vivid colours, but also quite rainy. Make sure you pack a raincoat to enjoy the pretty streets of the picturesque towns and villages.
We do not recommend Hungary’s long, harsh winter, despite the prospect of hot baths in the springs of Budapest or restoring breaks in the delightfully old-fashioned and nostalgic cafés.
