Höfn is the capital of the Vatnajökull region and of the langoustine. Set on a peninsula between two lagoons and separated from the ocean by sand banks, the town developed out of a trading post in the 19C. It is now promoting its past with a programme to renovate and regenerate the port area. Although the town is not overly striking for its charm, it makes a pleasant base for a stopover, with a good choice of accommodation, shops and restaurants. The port is the liveliest part of town, while the surrounding area offers many interesting places to explore.
