This hike, only for experienced walkers (22.5km - approx. 10hr), starts at the Básar refuge (240m). The path climbs up to Fimmvörduháls pass (1 116m) and winds through superb landscapes between Eyjafjallajökull and Mýrdalsjökull. The descent starts alongside the River Skógá, which is dotted with waterfalls, including the famous Skógafoss. If you can, spend the night at the Fimmvörduskáli refuge, before returning to Skógar. NB: further to the eruption in 2010, the route can be deviated.
