It was perhaps inevitable that this attractive fishing village would become a popular sailing resort with the wealthy middle class from Cork. Crosshaven began to develop in the 19C, when it was linked to the city by steamship, and grew further with the arrival of the railway in 1904. A British military base occupied Camden fort at that time. The renowned Royal Cork Yacht Club, founded in Cobh in 1720, moved to Crosshaven in 1969. This popular sailing resort is also a busy sea fishing centre.
