Glencolumbkille

Glencolumbkille
The Essential
Coming from Malin Beg, you will get a more attractive view over the glaciated valley, between the sections of cliff that give way to a pretty, sandy beach. Glencolmcille is named after St Colmcille or Culumba, who built a hermitage here in the 6C. Every year on 9 June, his saint's day, there is a 5km pilgrim walk, Turas Colmcille ("Journey of Colmcille"), which traditionally starts at midnight: pilgrims make their way along the 12 stations of the cross. These are marked by pillar stones and thought to have been engraved before the year 700.
