Killorglin
The Essential
This lively, bustling town is home to Puck Fair, one of the largest fairs in Ireland, which takes place the second week in August. Rooted in an old pagan tradition, Aonach an Phoic (meaning "Fair of the He-Goat" in Gaelic), is celebrated in honour of the god Lug and coincides with the harvest festival. Presided over by a goat, enthroned with great fanfare as king of the town and exhibited on a rostrum, participants drink, dance and sing for three days and three nights.
