The Essential
The town of Carlingford looks across at the Mourne Mountains. Very lively at weekends thanks to its many pubs and restaurants which attract its northern neighbours, this charming little port is renowned for its oysters. The town has retained evidence of its past, such as the small King John's Castle, whose romantic silhouette overlooks the sea, and an old 16C merchants' house, Taaffe's Castle, which stands slightly set back from the quayside.
