A UNESCO World Heritage Site thanks to its Sassi, Matera was built out of light-coloured stone on the top of the Murge plateaux. The town rises in successive layers of small buildings, cut out of the rock, painting an unusual picture. This maze of tuff stone dwellings, many of which have been restored, co-exists alongside more modern, sympathetically designed buildings, while contemporary art is exhibited in various venues around the town. Matera, Italy's European Capital of Culture in 2019, is a successful blend of tradition and modernity.
