Set at 480m above sea level, splendid Gerace surveys the plain from its vantage point. Its unassailable position explains why it became the "city of 100 bells", a major religious centre, as its numerous churches illustrate. The monumental centre is in the upper town, erstwhile seat of political and religious power. Don't miss the Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta, one of Calabria's finest and most original cathedrals.
