The sister of Emperor Honorius (circa 392-450), Galla Placidia held court in Ravenna in truly ostentatious Roman style... Her mausoleum is an impressive 5C construction in the form of a Latin cross, decorated with mosaics featuring geometric motifs, Gospel symbols and animals of Roman inspiration. Star and floral motifs adorn the dark blue vaults and cupola. In the tympanum and on the pendentives, the mosaics have a symbolism redolent of peace.
