According to legend, an eagle (aquila) crossed the sky on the day that this former Roman settlement, the fourth largest in the Roman Empire, was founded in 181 BC. The town became a flourishing market town and was used as a headquarters by Augustus during his struggle against the Germanic tribes. From 554 to 1751, Aquileia was one of the most important ecclesiastical patriarchates in Italy. The basilica and archaeological area have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1998.
