The seat of the Patriarch of Aquileia from 1238 to 1420, Udine then came under Venetian rule. Today, this elegant and convivial town combines fine architecture with the rustic charm of its traditional restaurants. It is also home to artistic masterpieces by Tiepolo, the last great painter of the Venetian School. However, it is the Gothic and Renaissance buildings, narrow arcaded streets and secluded squares which give the town its timeless appeal.
