Ariccia's small historic centre, squeezed between two lakes - Lago Albano and Lago di Nemi, boasts some real treasures of Baroque monuments. The layout of the main square was designed by Bernini in 1664. The palace on the left became the property of the Chigi banking family in the 17C, while, on the right, the church, Santa Maria dell'Assunzione, is flanked by two elegant porticoes. Ariccia is also renowned for its speciality of roast suckling pig (porchetta), which is celebrated on the first Sunday of September.
