Following in the wake of the fashionable French Riviera, San Remo, situated in a sheltered bay, began to attract British and Russian visitors towards the end of the 19C, thanks to its mild winters. A casino quickly followed, as did the construction of luxury hotels which consolidated the resort's appeal to wealthy travellers. Although a century later the clientele has changed, many are still drawn here by the gaming tables. The town has also diversified and is now a commercial centre for flowers.
