Piazza Paolo VI (Duomo Nuovo)

The square owes its current name to local boy, Giovanni Battista Montini, more generally known as Pope Paul VI (1963-78). The immense new white marble dome (17C) has replaced the former Romanesque dome (late 11C). Inside, there is a magnificent pink marble sarcophagus surmounted by a recumbent statue of the Bishop and, in the chancel, canvases by Moretto and Romanino. Beside the new Cathedral is the Broletto, an austere Romanesque building with a Balcony of Proclamations.
