Mantua
The Essential
Recommended
With its back to the slow-flowing River Mincio, which spreads out into three lakes encircling the town, Mantua is proud of its distinctive identity which is expressed in its fine local cuisine. Former capital of the Gonzaga family, enlightened patrons of the arts during the Renaissance period, the city became one of Europe's leading artistic and intellectual centres. Thanks to its rich cultural heritage and fine monuments, along with those of Sabbioneta to the south of the town, the town is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
